11/7/2023 - A5XV Mount Hobson

Mount Hobson was a bit of a revelation for me - it's a very cool mount and I think it's very underrated. I am keen to head back up there and do it as a VOTA.

The views are impressive - from the city and harbour, to the Southern Motorway sneaking around the central suburbs, plus you can see a number of other mounts around you.

While on Mt Hobson I chatted with Soren ZL1SKL on simplex 146.550 MHz, and on the Bombay Repeater with ZL1RLF Rolfe and ZL1TJL Ken.

Ken then suggested we try a repeater called Maungakawa, which is a town just outside of Cambridge in the Waikato. I had never used that repeater before but we managed to both get in and make a contact. From what I gather, the repeater is in a location called Sanitorium Hill, some 150 kilometers away from Mt Hobson by car.

All in all, Mt Hobson is definitely worth a visit.
