I had wanted to visit Klondyke for a while, given it is the location of a radio tower containing (amongst other things) a repeater that reaches Auckland and Waikato. It certainly was a fascinating site visit for me.
On this particular day it so happened there were a handful of other people heading up SOTA summits, so it turned into a S2S bonanza!
It's quite a long drive there, and when I approached the AZ I got too close to the numerous towers and my radios were blasted with RF so I had to back track down a little bit.
Finding a good spot was difficult, and it was a bit stressful having to juggle things and move around a bit, but I persevered and made the necessary contacts on 2m.
ZL1KB Scott was first up S2S over on ZL1/WK-153 Pukemako
Followed by ZL2AJ Warren S2S on ZL1/WK-024 Pureora
ZL1LZ Matt was S2S on ZL1/WK-035 Te Aroha
Finally ZL1SKL Soren was S2S on ZL1/AK-018 Clevedon
ZL1TGS Jimmy popped up as well, and along with ZL1SKL Soren the three of us had some simplex DMR fun on 70cm.
After making the contacts I walked back up to the towers to have a closer look and eat lunch. My handheld registered a -37 strength for the 6625 repeater while I was sitting under it.
