19/1/2025 - ZL1/AK-011 Moir Hill

I had three plans for this day: to do Moir Hill as SOTA, to visit the Warkworth Satellite Station, and to do Geocaching along the way. I am happy to say I ticked all three off my list!

But this blog is about SOTA!

The good thing about Moir Hill is that you can drive to the AZ - the bad news is there's no real view to speak of; apart from a couple of radio towers.

This was a quick session up here for me - I pulled up just before the UTC rollover, and people were chasing! All up it was about 20 minutes, I got 4 contacts just before the hour, and four just after the hour (including 2x S2S times two) - then it was on to my other indulgences for the day!

Before the hour (all 146.500 MHz):

  • ZL1TZP Steve S2S at ZL1/WK158 Puketutu

  • ZL1TO at Maraitai Beach

  • ZL1KB Scott

  • ZL1JRW Jason S2S at ZL1/AK-027 Pukekohe Hill

After the hour I picked up the following:

  • ZL1KB Scott

  • ZL1JRW Jason S2S at ZL1/AK-027 Pukekohe Hill

  • ZL1TZP Steve S2S at ZL1/WK158 Puketutu

  • ZL3JD Phil - this was a tough one, I could hear him fine (5/8), but he gave me a 3/2 in return. Because I liked his callsign (I'm JD), I sent him an email afterwards and we went back and forth a couple of times.

This is an excellent SOTA summit if you're short on time - close to Auckland and drive up to the AZ. Here are some photos including a couple from my trip to visit the Warkworth Satellite Station:
