Luckily I had been to Mangatangi before (to do TOTA - check out that blog post here) so I knew what I was in for and where to go. It's a steady incline the whole way, with a bit of steep punishment at the end.

It was great to be back here to do my first HF SOTA activation (by myself), using my own radio. I was also using my homebrew linked dipole antenna.

The day ended up being a great success with an immediate contact to Easter Island (3G0YA) on 28 MHz.

A few minutes later, I got KF6HI in Arizona, USA; followed by VK2IO in Sydney, Australia, and VK4TMZ in Queensland, Australia.

After that I got a few local contacts on 146.500 MHz - ZL1SKL Soren (S2S - somewhere Northland from memory), ZL1MBZ Murray, and ZL1ACK Rob.

To round out the day I had one contact on 7 MHz - ZL1HIM Ian in Bay of Plenty, NZ.

Safe to say, I was very pleased with how the day went! It was a real thrill to make contacts with people overseas using an antenna I made myself and in a beautiful location which takes a bit of effort to get to. Cell reception is very patchy up here - radio is the only option!
