24/11/24 - AKV-21 Little Rangitoto

Little Rangitoto is small suburban park located in Remuera. While is does have some height and views into Auckland City, the usual issues of interference in residential settings can set in. To combat that, in order to activate Little Rangitoto, I elected to use my car rig so I could output 25 watts instead of 5 watts on an HT. For VOTA, unlike SOTA, this is allowed!

This was also a good opportunity to place a VOTA cache at this location, which can be found here: https://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GCB0N9B

The activation went well with several contacts.

First of all I had ZL1ACK Rob, who was a V2V on Mt Hobson.

Shortly thereafter Rob and I tracked down ZL1SWW Simon, ZL1AOX Ian, and ZL1NL Nick.

We also managed to track down some of the guys at Musick Point Radio Group and I got half a contact with ZL1MPU Maurice before an accidental push of a button on an unknown radio (being passed around various operators) caused a shift of frequency so we never manage to complete the contact.

Next came ZL1SKL Soren and also ZL1ACK Rob who had moved to Mt Eden so we managed another V2V contact.

ZL1SWW Simon decided to join in the fun and shot down to Glover Park which is AKV-25, where he managed to successfully activate that spot for the first time.

If you are planning on heading to Little Rangitoto, I suggest taking a radio capable of pushing out more than 5W due to the location. But it's a lovely little park, and remember to have a hunt for the geocache while you're there!
